Who doesn’t love cake?

As a baby & family photographer I’m lucky to meet so many lovely local families during photoshoots and events in Haywards Heath and the wider area of Sussex. It’s hard to choose my favourite photoshoot because they’re all so special for so many different reasons, but as a lover of all things cake, I am partial to a cake smash session. On the opposite end of the scale, I really do hate mess. Cake and smash shouldn’t really go together, but when it’s combined with chubby little fingers, squishy little toes and the cheekiest of smiles, it’s the perfect combo and well and truly worth the clean up.

Cakesmash sessions are relatively new, having been introduced in the US around 8 years ago and quickly they caught on in the UK. They’re an alternative way to celebrate your baby’s 1st birthday, if you want something a little different to a portrait session. Brady came in a few weeks ago with his Mum for his special birthday photoshoot. He loved the cake and took no persuading at all to get stuck in!

We start the session with a mini portrait. This is a great opportunity to update your album with family pictures and I encourage both parents and siblings to get in front of the camera for a family shot before we move on to individual photographs of the Birthday both or girl.

After the mini portrait, we move on to the cake smash. Some babies take their time, weighing up the icing, and picking at the frosting, and others dive straight in with a handful or cake or a full on smash with the wooden spoon. Brady took his time, savouring the icing before finding the sponge hidden inside, which was a real hit.

Once baby is well and truly caked (pardon the pun!) it’s time to clean up with a splash in the tin tub. Now this is where things get crazy. No body escapes without  a drenching. Some splash, others delight in the bubble clapping and sloshing about and some babies just sit back and continue to eat cake… I mean what could be better than cake & bubbles in the bath?!
