Sussex Photographer / Harry’s 1st Birthday Cakesmash

When Harry’s mum booked in for his cake smash session, we chatted through how to prepare for the photoshoot. You see, not all babies take to cake instantly. The sensation of sweet riding can be a bit much when you’ve never really been allowed to indulge in real sugary food before. And if like me, you’re not really a messy play type of Mummy, then chances are your baby worn’t be used to getting stuck right into a cake. Nor will they love being sticky. So, Holly said she’s have a little practice in advance, but she was sure Harry would love it,

So, how do you think little Harry got on, judging by the pictures?

He literally smashed it! First of all, he played with the flour, even tasted it. There was a huge flour storm and once the dust settled we brought out his cake.

He had us in stitches as he beat the living daylights out of that cake with his little wooden spoon. He ate the cake, he threw the cake (in all directions) and he squished the cake. The end result was one very sticky, happy boy. The craziness continued with his clean up splash session as little Harry drenched everything and everyone in sight.

High Five Harry! My most fun and enthusiastic cakesmash ever!

The Benefits of Messy Play

Messy play is so good for our babies and older children. It allows them to feel, smell and hear different things depending on what they play with, using all of their senses. There are loads of ways in which you can do this either at home or through baby groups which cater just for sensory and messy play. When it comes to weaning, baby led weaning allows your baby to learn about how food feels, smells and tastes and gives them so much confidence in trying new things.

The Sussex Children & Family centres run a session called Tiny Explorers which is a great session for sensory play, with our the mess in your own home. Click above to find out more.
